5 Questions enterprises should ask before investing in frontline technology

Why do frontline technology decisions often fail?

Frontline teams are vital for successful field operations across the critical infrastructure sector, yet enterprise technology strategies are often focused most on empowering desk-based workers. This disconnect is a major reason frontline technology investments struggle to scale or deliver long-term value.

McKinsey finds that the right digital technologies can improve operational performance ( including safety, reliability and customer satisfaction) by 20–40% across utility field teams and mission-critical operations.

Point-of-work data capture, process transformation, and AI-native intelligence are a massive opportunity for enterprises looking to drive operational excellence. Yet when frontline realities are overlooked, organisations face fragmented systems, poor adoption, and low return on investment (ROI) or long delays in value realisation.

Rethinking value: How reliability and affordability must work together

There is growing urgency across the UK energy sector to show that reliability and affordability can work together. For many customers, energy remains one of the most critical, and most visible, costs of daily life. Rising bills, service interruptions, and infrastructure investment all compete for public understanding. What ties them together is a simple question: What value is the energy system delivering, and for whom?

According to Ofgem’s 2025 pricing research, domestic consumers consistently point to affordability as a top concern. Many also called for a system that is simpler, fairer, and more transparent. These expectations challenge all parts of the energy system, from policy to delivery, to demonstrate how operational performance translates into public benefit.

Utility firms are shifting toward a hybrid model that separates high-value, in-person coaching from scalable, remote oversight.
By dividing responsibilities, organisations ensure field-based managers focus on frontline coaching and customer engagement. Control centre supervisors handle oversight, progress monitoring, and live compliance across dozens of active jobs.

Texas leads the United States in both the number and total cost of billion-dollar weather disasters. Since 1980, the state has experienced 190 such events, resulting in approximately $402 billion in cumulative damages. In 2023 alone, Texas saw 16 severe weather events, including floods, derechos, droughts, and freezes. These incidents disrupted operations, stressed infrastructure, and created significant risks for utility field teams

Texas utility operations must contend with these rapid changes, as conditions can evolve within hours, rendering the original plan for the day obsolete. Field teams need to respond swiftly and confidently.

From reaction to resilience: How the next generation of Texas Utilities are strengthening storm readiness and cutting operational downtime with FYLD

About this case

Across the southern U.S., utilities face the same challenge: how to protect workers and restore service faster as extreme weather becomes the norm.

This case study draws on outcomes achieved by large U.S. municipal utilities operating in regions regularly impacted by hurricanes, flooding, and ice storms — conditions that mirror the realities Texas utilities face today.

These results show what’s possible for Texas operators looking to strengthen resilience and accelerate recovery ahead of the next major storm.

Our FYLD customer, a large municipal utility provider, serves millions of customers and delivers water, gas, and electric services across multiple major cities and rural communities. The organization faced growing operational challenges from extreme weather events including hurricanes, flooding, and ice storms. These events created high-risk, high-pressure environments where safety, speed, and coordination were mission-critical.

AI that delivers: Turning transport strategy into real-time results

The UK Department for Transport’s 2025 Transport AI Action Plan outlines a bold, multi-year vision: to embed responsible AI into the backbone of the national transport system. It proposes strategic pathways, regulatory enablers, and ethical frameworks that reflect genuine ambition.

But for transport operators on the ground, the challenge is less about understanding these ambitions and more about putting them into action. Operational risk, timeline pressure, and delivery complexity are intensifying and action must match ambition.

Across the sector, organisations are exploring ways to scale AI adoption, but progress often stalls without embedded, field-ready tools. When technology lives in the back office rather than the point of delivery, outcomes remain theoretical.

In the latest episode of FYLDTalks, FYLD’s Director of Global Marketing, Brynne Hazzard, sits down with Brett Stein, Industry Lead at FYLD, to tackle a costly and often overlooked issue: why are utilities still fixing the same mistakes over and over again in the field?

Together, they explore the costly reality of rework — which can account for 5–10% of project costs — and the hidden drivers behind it, from repetitive frontline tasks to the lack of field data. Brett shares how utilities are turning to intelligent, field-focused technology to capture data, boost first-time fix rates, and redirect crews toward more productive work.
